What are Extras, and why are they not a part of the main novel?

番外 aka Extras
Fanwai is a Chinese word, pronounced fān wài, meaning a somewhat related digression.
The extras are meant to supplement the main novel/text, and they are generally branch stories outside of the main story, and are handled in a way to create a new short story or a tale similar to the main story from a different perspective. It may also be used to elaborate on parts that were mentioned in the main story and expand them further, maybe providing an explanation.
It differs from the novel where the author tends to reveal or develop the content in correlation with the main plot.
